Upstate New York has an abundance of many things, including indomitable spirit, winter and dairy products. This chilly day warm-up makes the most of the resources available well north of the Mason Dixon line.

After a day of cold weather activities, a hot milk punch quiets the soul and makes the blood run warmer.

    • 1½ ounces rum
    • 1½ ounces brandy
    • Honey or genuine maple syrup to taste
    • Hot milk
    • Cinnamon or nutmeg

Fill a good-sized stoneware mug with hot water to warm. Heat milk (any fat content) on the stove or in the microwave. Empty hot water from mug and replace with rum, brandy and honey. Fill mug with hot milk and sprinkle with nutmeg or cinnamon. Wrap up in a generous throw in front of a crackling fire. Add a good book and let it snow.
