Genuine maple syrup and real butter make these brownies, or more accurately, “blondies,” sumptuous in their own right. Used as a base for this New York State sundae they are incomparable.

    Brownies

    • 1 cup butter
    • ½ cup brown sugar
    • 1 cup pure maple syrup*
    • 2 eggs
    • 2 cups flour
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1 cup walnuts, finely chopped

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream together butter and brown sugar. Add eggs and beat until blended, then stir in maple syrup. Beat in flour and baking powder. Stir in walnuts.

Pour batter into a prepared (greased and floured) 9” x 13” baking pan. Bake about 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool and cut into squares.

Now… to make a dessert that is beyond decadent: Place a Maple Brownie square onto a dessert dish and top with vanilla or maple walnut ice cream. Drizzle with pure light amber maple syrup and sprinkle with toasted walnuts. Fresh or dried blueberries are a fine addition, too. Classy, delicious and affectionately New York.

*Dark syrup has a more robust flavor and is preferred for baking. Lighter syrups are generally used for toppings. Let your taste decide.
